Policy Fellowship position in the UC Center for Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology, California NanoSystems Institute, UCLA

The University of California Center for Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology (UC CEIN) is recruiting a policy fellow to join the UC CEIN’s team of highly integrated social and natural scientists who will work collaboratively with the UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation at the School of Public Affairs and the UCLA School of Law.  The fellowship is an opportunity to undertake high-caliber research that advances policy frameworks for nano-materials. Working initially as a junior researcher with leading scholars at UCLA, the goal is for the fellow to become a nationally renowned scholar in this emerging field. The fellow would be expected to co-author publications, and help to shape the intellectual content of convenings with regulators, industry and the non-profit community and pursue research funding opportunities. Intellectually, the fellow would be expected to be able to creatively assist in reformulating policies in light of emerging science and industry practices. Such policy reforms may involve policy adaptations (incremental changes to existing statutes and procedures) as well as more transformational visions of regulations and treaties.  This reformulation would result in a variety of outputs including webinars, publications, white papers, and other materials to translate the intellectual work accomplished, ultimately aggregating into a book.  Further, the fellow would work collectively with an executive committee made up of diverse faculty membership throughout the project.

Professor J.R. DeShazo (Luskin Center for Innovation, School of Public Affairs) and Professor Timothy Malloy (Sustainable Technology & Policy Program and School of Law) will jointly oversee this fellow.  The successful candidate will possess excellent capacity for research and writing, good communication, facilitation and presentation skills and an eagerness to learn about, and critically assess, statutes governing nano-materials including Toxics Substances Control Act (TSCA); the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA); the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&CA); Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA); and the Clean Air Act (CAA), among others.  Qualifications require the candidate to hold a doctoral degree in policy, political science or related fields, or a law degree.

The UC CEIN is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency with the mission of using a multidisciplinary approach to conduct research, knowledge acquisition, education and outreach to ensure the responsible use and safe implementation of nanotechnology in the environment. This will allow the USA and International Communities to leverage the benefits of nanotechnology to the benefit of the global economy, society and the environment. For more information, visit the UC CEIN website (www.cein.ucla.edu).

Salary: $55,000 to $70,000, depending upon experience, with a University of California benefits package.

Time frame: Initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal.

Applications will be reviewed beginning July 15, 2012.

This position is available immediately.  Please forward curriculum vitae and 3 references to David Avery, Chief Administrative Officer, UC CEIN (avery@ucla.edu).
