冠状病毒（Coronavirus)是一个常见而又古老的病毒大家系，自发现以来一直被认为是对人类相对无害的一类病毒。2003年严重急性呼吸综合征冠状病毒（SARS-CoV)的暴发流行彻底颠覆了人类对于冠状病毒的已有认识，意识到其高致病潜能，并发现蝙蝠可以作为致命性冠状病毒的自然宿主。

随着分子技术的进步和人们对冠状病毒的深人研究和探索，分别于加04年和加05年发现人冠状病毒NL63(human Coronavirus NL63，HCoV-NL63)和人冠状病毒HKU1(Human Coronavirus HKU1，HCoV-HKU1)。2012年发生在阿拉伯半岛并持续进展的中东呼吸综合征冠状病毒(Middle East respiratory syndrome Coronavirus，MERS-CoV)的暴发流行，警示冠状病毒对人类仍存在重大危害，而其分布范围之广超乎人们的预期。HCoV-229E 和HCoV-NL63属于α属冠状病毒，COVID-19、HCoV-OC43、SARS-CoV、HCoV-HKU1 和MERS-CoV均为β属冠状病毒，其中，HCoV-OC43 和HCoV-HKU1 属于A亚群，SARS-CoV 属于B亚群，MERS-CoV属于C亚群。 2019新型冠状病毒（COVID-19）是目前已知的第7种可以感染人的冠状病毒，其余6种分别是HCoV-229E、HCoV-OC43、HCoV-NL63、HCoV-HKU1、SARS-CoV（引发重症急性呼吸综合征）  和MERS-CoV（引发中东呼吸综合征）。
