Heavy Metal Pollution and Health Risk Assessment in the Vicinity of the Abandoned Pyrite Smelting Slag
Abstract
The objective of this research is, firstly, to investigate the contamination levels and dispersion patterns of As and heavy metals, secondly, to assess As and heavy metal pollution potential risk of health effects on the local residents in the vicinity of the abandoned of the pyrite smelting slag, somewhere in China. Samples of slag and soil were collected around the mine tailing site. After appropriate preparation, all samples were analyzed for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni and Zn. Elevated levels of As and heavy metals were found in tailing. Mean concentrations of As, Cu and Ni in agricultural soil were higher than the permissible level. Especially, maximum levels of As, Cu and Ni in farmland soil were up to 7086.2 mg/Kg, 453.33 mg/kg and 706.667mg/Kg respectively. But the concentration of As and heavy metals in pyrite smelting slag were higher than the vicinity soils. These results indicate that mine slag can be the main contamination sources of As and heavy metals in the soil system. The HQ (hazard quotient) values of all samples were simulated in the health risk assessment model. A health risk assessment model was constructed to simulate and assess the risk associated with high As, Cu and Ni so on in soils in the study area. The methodology consists of a typical exposure assessment model, constructed for adult and children populations. The exposure routes that are related to soil exposed are mainly discussed in this study are direct soil ingestion and dermal exposure to soil. As and heavy metal exposure for both populations is compared with relevant reference dose levels providing hazard quotients. The results of the quantitative health risk assessment study are analyzed and presented in the following table.
