How to become a freelance English editor (2)

Once you have decided to start your own business, it's better to have a "mentor," someone who has done it (all).

I have learned a few things over the years, on my own (since I don't know anyone who does editing for a living).

First, do less (if you can). If the English is not wrong, even if it's not the best (or what you prefer), leave it alone. For example, I perfer to use "sea-surface temperature," but no journal will reject a paper that uses "sea surface temperature." So, leave it alone, and save yourself both time and finger pain.

Second, stop guessing (what the authors want to say) after having tried for five seconds. Just highlight the text and ask the authors to explain to you (in Chinese).

Third, use Excel to keep track of your work, even if you have an accountant for filing tax.

Fourth, take a break every hour, or you may hurt your wrists/eyes. You can just get up and stretch a little, or do some cleaning (snacking is not recommended :)

Fifth, do something for fun each day. It can be talking to a friend, playing with a child, or going to a yoga class.

Finally, reach out to your colleagues to build a client base.

Happy editing!
