Abstract

This seminar is organised to welcome Professor N. R. Morgenstern on his visit to the Department of Civil Engineering, HKU. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Hong Kong Slope Safety System and Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO), Professor Morgenstern was invited by GEO and HKIE to visit Hong Kong as a heavyweight distinguished guest because of his momentous contributions to improving slope safety and advancing landslide risk management practice in Hong Kong. HKU’s Department of Civil Engineering has carried out teaching and research on landslide prevention and mitigation in Hong Kong since 1954. During 1954 to 1986, Professor Peter Lumb of the Department had dedicated his life towards the “dawning” of geotechnical (slope) engineering in Hong Kong and received numerous awards in recognition of his great contribution. Incidentally, Professor Lumb and Professor Morgenstern were members of the 1976 Independent Review Panel on Fill Slopes of the Hong Kong Government. The Panel’s report recommended the establishment of a government control office for slope safety in Hong Kong, which kicked off the development of the Hong Kong Slope Safety System in 1977. In 2000, the Department, together with HKIE’s Geotechnical Division, established the Lumb Lecture. Professor Morgenstern was invited and gave the Inaugural Lumb Lecture on 10 May 2000. Furthermore,under the leadership of Professor C. F. Lee, the Department received a generous donation of HK$25 million from The Jockey Club Charities Trust and established the Jockey Club Research and Information Centre for Landslip Prevention and Land Development in 1998. Some of the Centre’s research results and their social impacts will be reported and updated in this seminar. They include: 1) technical advancements in ground investigation; 2) theoretical advancements in slope stability analysis and design methods; and 3) knowledge advancements in causes and mechanisms of landslides.

About the Speaker

Professor Quentin Yue joined HKU’s Department of Civil Engineering as an Assistant Professor in 1999, immediately after the establishment of the Jockey Club Researchand Information Centre for Landslip Prevention and Land Development. He was also appointed as an Assistant Director responsible for executing the Centre’s research activities in landslide prevention and mitigation. Using the Centre as an initial platform, Professor Yue has carried out many research projects on landslide prevention at the Department since then. Some of these research results will be presented in this seminar. Professor Yue obtained his BSc and MSc education in earthquake and geology at Peking University in Beijing from 1979 to 1986. He obtained his PhD education in geotechnical engineering at Carleton University in Ottawa from 1988 to 1992. Prior to joining HKU, he had about 10 years of professional experience in Hong Kong, Ottawa and Beijing. In particular, as a geotechnical engineer of Halcrow, he worked on the 5-year Accelerated Landslip Preventive Measures Programme in Hong Kong from 1996 to 1999. He qualified as a chartered engineer in Ontario in 1995 and as a member of HKIE in the Geotechnical Discipline in Hong Kong in 1998. He has been a registered professional engineer (geotechnical) in Hong Kong since 1999.
