北美古植物学名师Wilson Nichols Stewart （1917--2004）
Wilson Nichols Stewart（1917--2004）1917年12月7日生于威斯康辛州的Madison，他是20世纪北美地区著名的古植物学家之一。1966年之前，W. N. Stewart主要在美国生活。自1966年起，他供职于加拿大Alberta大学。2004年4月2日，W. N. Stewart在加拿大病逝，享年86岁。
在由植物形态解剖学向古植物学的交叉与跨越中，W. N. Stewart是关键人物之一。W. N. Stewart利用煤核中(coal balls)的植物化石材料研究种子植物的起源和早期演化，培养了古植物学人才，编写了一本优秀的古植物学教科书。W. N. Stewart的学术谱系(Genealogy of W. N. Stewart’s academic family)非常强盛，对当今美国古植物学的发展影响很大。
一、早期学习与工作经历
1939年，W. N. Stewart毕业于威斯康辛大学（University of Wisconsin—Madison），获得学士学位。W. N. Stewart对水韭有兴趣，研究水韭的结构域发育问题，他的论文题目是：
The structure and development of Isoetes macrospora
Thesis (B.A.)--University of Wisconsin--Madison, 1939.
1940—1941年，W. N. Stewart在伊利诺斯大学（University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign--UIUC）植物系担任助手，后跟随著名植物形态解剖学家John Theodore Buchholz(1888--1951)学习，主要从事化石植物的研究。在W. N. Stewart研究化石植物的过程中，J. T. Buchholz以前的学生---James Morton Schopf（1911---1978）对W. N. Stewart的帮助很大。【注：J. M. Schopf是20世纪美国著名古植物学家，他先后于1932年和1937年从伊利诺斯大学植物系获得理学硕士学位和哲学博士学位。J. M. Schopf的博士论文主要研究煤核。】

二、UIUC古植物学实验室（1947---1965）
1947年9月W. N. Stewart重返UIUC植物系，不久建立古植物学实验室。1948年，他开设古植物学课程。W. N. Stewart一方面从事种子蕨的研究，一方面培养古植物学人才。
1952年Robert Max Kosanke（1917---1996）在W. N. Stewart指导下完成博士学位论文：

三、在加拿大Alberta大学工作
1966年W. N. Stewart到加拿大Alberta大学生物系工作，继续从事古植物学的教学与科研工作。W. N. Stewart在Alberta大学培养了古植物学人才，如Gar W. Rothwell，James F. Basinger等。Gar W. Rothwell跟随W. N. Stewart学习古植物学，于1975年获得博士学位。James F. Basinger先后于1976年和1979年获得硕士与博士学位。
1978年，W. N. Stewart退休。退休后的W. N. Stewart着力编写古植物学教科书。1983年，W. N. Stewart出版Paleobotany and the Evolution of Plants (第1版)。1993年，W. N. Stewart与Gar W. Rothwell合作推出该教科书第2版。
