Charles David White (1862--1935), NAS
第38期《古植物学的故事》简述了美国科学院及其古植物学院士与外籍院士的基本情况。可是，美国科学院已故院士、著名地质学家和古植物学家Charles David White (1862---1935)被遗漏，现补充如下：
1886年C. D. White毕业于康乃尔大学，其学位论文主要研究泥盆纪植物化石Ptilophyton vanuxemi Dawson。同年，康乃尔大学地质学与古生物学教授Henry Shaler Williams (1847--1918)[注：此教授为胡适先生(HU Shih, 1891---1962)的知名好友-- Edith Clifford Williams (1885--1971)的父亲]推荐C. D. White到美国联邦地质调查局(The U.S. Geological Survey----USGS)工作。
1894年C. D. White当选为德国科学院(German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina)院士。1912年当选为美国科学院院士。1931—1933年担任美国科学院副院长。
1903—1935年，C. D. White还兼任过位于华盛顿的美国国家自然历史博物馆(The U.S.NM)负责古植物学研究及标本管理的负责人（associate curator & curator）。C. D. White为什么要担任这个兼职？这涉及到美国联邦地质调查局与美国国家自然历史博物馆在国家层面及在法律层面上的长期协作关系。这对于中国国家自然历史博物馆的建设及其与相关学术机构的密切协作是有借鉴意义的。
