今年不去开果蝇会，看了一下大会主页上的内容。大会报告的其中一个演讲者是MarcFreeman，他来自UMass Medical School，还比较年轻，是搞神经生物学的。我以前搜索FreemanM [Au]的时候，偶尔会看见他的工作，而我真正想找的人是MatthewFreeman。

Matthew Freeman的实验室在剑桥MRC，主要用果蝇为模型研究EGFRpathway，也研究其他与cellfate, cell shape  and cell proliferation有关的基因功能。MatthewFreeman具有优秀基础生物学研究科学家的三个特征：1）文章发在高档次杂志上；2）发表的结果极少（如果有的话）被后人发现有问题；3）从他实验室出来的人大部分能在好的地方建自己的实验室。

Matthew Freeman算是年轻得志，他是EMBO Gold Medal获得者，这个奖是颁给40岁以下的生物科学家的。他在领奖的时候要在EMBO杂志上发一篇review，讲自己的研究工作以及发迹史。他讲到了自己在GeraldRubin实验室做博士后时的情境：

Within Gerry’slab there was a degree of commitment and hard work that I had not come acrossin England. Twelve-hour days and working through weekends were common andalthough this might not be sustainable forever, it taught me a lot about howmuch one can get done when necessary
