Miscellaneous

With two intermediate stops between Boston and Beijing, adjusting to jet lag, setting up my PC on the Tsinghua-Chinese server, and working full time, I had a lot of trouble and little time getting on line and write a blog piece.
Anyhow here are some miscellaneous thoughts and sights about Beijing
1. 民以食為天. I have written about Chinese restaurants of the world before. But coming home to China and have high and low cuisines everyday is always a treat. Just within walking distance of my Tsinghua apartment, there are four eating places featuring Korean, Cantonese, 江苏, and northern styles of cooking at everyday Beijing prices. I have also been taken to a ultra fancy restaurant featured in international magazines for its architectural décor,  a Mongolia-Northwest  style restaurant of ethnic food, and a tea house with a 古筝 concert performance in the past week.
2. The number of private cars parked in my apartment complex has doubled since last year. This has been happening since 2001. There were no cars whatsoever during my first year (2001)here. Of course this is no surprise to anyone here. Rush hour traffic is worse.
3. Looked into some tourism to Shanxi stone cave and mountains. The regular price for Chinese tourist with Chinese accommodations and amenities is 900 yuan per person for three days. But the minute we wanted sometime better (and as soon as the agency found that you are from abroad), the price went up to 5500 yuan per person. It is not clear whether or not we are really buying a true upgrade or just “inflated charge” for foreigners. For example, they want us to take an English speaking guide even though we don’t need one.
4. Working with Tsinghua colleagues and students are a joy. Many stay this golden holiday week just so that they can interact with me. Formulating problems (brainstorming to ask the right question) requires face-to-face rapid feedback that e-mail exchanges cannot accomplish. Once the problems have been formulated working together via e-mail across the Pacific ocean can be very effective. I will write and think while my Chinese counterpart sleeps, they do the same when I sleep. This 24 hour cycle is even more efficient than working with my US colleagues. With occasional Skype phone connections, distance and time difference  are actually working in our favor
5. Made a date to meet with the ScienceNet editorial office for the first time since I start in late April. Looking forward to it. 

So long for now. I am not sure how much I will write the next two weeks since I am working on a very tight and full schedule.
