Coal Mine Disasters – then and now, US and China

Mining coal is an inherently dangerous business. Each year, many miners get injured or 
die. Recently coal mine accidents both in the US and in China have been in the news. In 
the US, the Utah coal mine collapse and the subsequent heroic efforts to save the six 
trapped miners have captured the national attention for the entire past week. In the mean 
time, China media reported four thousand deaths last year in the coal mines and other 
abuses of mine workers. 
In contrasting these two scenarios concerning mining accidents and miners, it is 
important to remember that in the 1930's, the US use to report thousands of death in the 
coal mines per year which led to the rise of the labor union, the United Mine Workers of 
America, and its fiery leader, John L. Lewis 
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_L._Lewis) who won many rights and benefits for 
the workers through strikes and political power. In its heyday, every presidential 
candidates pay attention to Lewis and his union and passed many legislation to protect 
the workers from the '30 to the 50's. While the power of the union declined in recent 
years, since nowadays there is less need for its existence. The mine companies and the 
union come to a mutually beneficial accommodation and work together for the common 
benefit. Thus, the lives of six miners becomes big news and the company spares no 
expense trying to rescue them.

In China in the mean time, the situation is different. It is my understanding that labor 
unions if they exist are relatively powerless. Workers and companies are not on a level 
playing field. Thus, government becomes the only equalizing force. However, the central 
government may have good intentions but no reach ( 鞭长莫及), and local government 
have different incentives in terms of economic growth and short term interests. As a 
result, abuses and deaths occur the same way as in the past of the US. Without the media 
in China, probably even more abuse will occur. In the long run and as the country and 
economy develops, of course (we hope) both the local government and the companies 
will realize that it is possible to make money and treat the workers better at the same time. 
And the workers and labor union will have more political power to bargain on a level 
playing field. 

In the 1960-70s, Taiwan use to export fake goods to the US. But in time Taiwan learned 
to produce quality goods and make money simultaneously so that the label "Made In 
Taiwan" jokingly shortened to = MIT. Development means learning the same economic 
and political lesson regardless whether it is in the US or China, mining coals or producing 
goods.
