People’s preferences for meat products is universal. We are carnivores. However, consuming meat is not energy efficient and wasteful. Take the example of beef. We waste the head, tail, feet, and most bones of a cow. As the world population approaches ten billion and wealthier, large scale production of animal meats for the entire population may not sustainable in the long run. I just saw a BBC documentary film about finding substitute food sources for “meat”. EATING INSECTS! While the thought disgusts most people (my wife did not even want me to talk about it), there is actual a movement and a mini industry producing such products as dried crickets and various kind of worms. The advantage is that such products are almost entirely protein and no wastes are involved. For people who have strong aversions about eating insect caracas, powdered form of such meat are available. “Burgers”, “meatballs”, and “Tofu” can be made from such dried and powdered insects.

Anyhow, the BBC reporter of the film actually went on an 8-day diet of consuming nothing but such meats plus vegetables. She became a convert at the end and promote these food sources for our future. The main obstacles to overcome for such life style is psychological. The taste can in fact be delicious properly cooked and prepared.
