Frustrations and Appeal of Donald Trump

I have said this before: CEO is the last dictator left in a democracy (in the sense that he has total control of his company and what he says goes. He can only be checked by his board of directors which rarely happens). But the Presidency of the United States is different. The US Constitution has many build-in “checks and balances”. The President, even though being the commander-in-chief of the most powerful nation in the world, often cannot do what he wants. This is the frustration of Donald Trump as he is finding out one year plus into his presidency. Almost half of the key people he appointed since coming into power has been fired, pressured to resign, or simply resigned. This is unprecedented. Trump demands loyalty and obedience to him while appointees only swore loyalty to the Presidency but not to him personally. Therein lies his frustration and problem in governing the country and may explain why he is so enamored with Putin, the president of Russia, who can do what he cannot. He tries to be a CEO of the US but is finding out that he cannot. It is my prediction that he will be a one term president and leave office in 2020. Look at it this way. He will be 75 in 2020. He is wealthy and already proved that he can do the near impossible by being elected. Why should he run the risk and humiliation of being defeated in 2020 and even if re-elected put up with all the frustrations and difficulties of the job for another four years? Never mind the possibility that if the Democrats took over the US Congress in Nov. 2018 and impeach-remove him from office. Why not retire and enjoy the rest of his life in leisure at his home in Mar-a-Lago? God willing, I’ll find out if my prediction is true in three more years.

On the other hand, one may ask how come so many people (35-40% of the voting population) still support him. In particular, there are significant portion of the Chinese-American immigrant population voted for him in the last election. My own speculations and interpretations are as follows:

i.                  The immigrant says to himself: I made it in a foreign land as a minority starting from nothing. Why can everyone do the same? We don’t need welfare cheats and lazy-do-nothing (of course one forgets that we are a highly educated and select group of the population. Not everyone is so fortunately endowed).

ii.               Trump is politically incorrect but right to say many sentiments out loud.  This is refreshing particularly to many immigrants.

iii.            Trump got away with so many scandalous things and affairs that I like to do myself but afraid of the consequences if caught. Thus, I admire his audacity/bravado and will vote for him.
