一般地，设b是任意给定的大于1的正整数，相差为2b的一对素数称为广义孪生素数。例如，当素数p=3,7,13,19,37,43,67,79时，p＋4均为素数；当素数p=5,7,11,13,17,23,31,37时，p＋6均为素数；当素数p=3,5,11,23,29, 53,59,71时，p＋8均为素数；当素数p=3, 7,13,19,31,37,43,61时，p＋10均为素数；当素数p=5,7,11,17,19,29,31,41时，p＋12均为素数。对给定的b，猜想有无限多对这样的素数，这就是广义孪生素数猜想，至今尚未被证明。同样，若猜想成立，哈代和李特尔伍德 (1922)猜测也将有相应的渐近公式成立。大量的数值计算均支持这一猜测。
