Last month the local Lexington Historical Society (LHS) of my home town asked me to give a talk with the above title. It was standing room only and well received. Many more persons who wanted to hear the talk were not able to come due to space limitations. Fortunately, the LHS arranged to have me give the talk one more time and videotaped the presentation. Note added 12/27/2010: If you read the comments below, you will find some persons having difficulties opening the site http://vimeo.com/18090705 while others do not. After some detective work, I suspect this is the reason. There are apparently two types of terminals in existence for Chinese Internet access. One type often found in universities and/or research institutions allow wide access to foreign websites. The other type avaliable to general public has more restricted access to foreign websites or specific publications. In my video, I used the words "Tianamen incident" in passing (without any political meaning, judgement, or comment) in connection with the fourth wave of student immigration to the US (see comment #1 to this article below) . Apparently those two words alone is enough to trigger blocking by the Chinese authorities for access to this video. I hope more knowledgeable readers can verify whether or not my suspicion is correct.

More note addwed 1/14/2011. Unfortunately, this site is now blocked on all computers. Neither can my Tsinghua colleagues access this site anymore. Too bad computers cannot be more intelligent.
