Position Title: Journal Publishing Manager (2 headcounts)

Department: Editorial and Society Management

Manager: Associate Director, Health Science - China

Working Location: Beijing or Shanghai, China

The Editorial and Society Management group of Wiley is offering a Journal Publishing Manager position based in our Beijing or Shanghai office to lead and manage the publication of a list of assigned journals to ensure they are published in line with associated society and company expectations. This professional position requires experience in functional area, the incumbent is acquiring knowledge and experience in discipline, solves a range of straightforward problems using knowledge learned on the job and by applying standard procedures.


Job Scope and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and, where appropriate, lead bids for journal acquisitions within for assigned journals in China, and other subject areas where support is needed
  • Maintain relationships with societies and editors of acquisition targets
  • Liaise with colleagues to ensure smooth transition of acquired journals into company processes
  • Improve the financial performance of the journals in the list to best practice levels
  • Lead, plan and implement strategies to develop the current journals in the list to increase readership and dissemination, and through maintaining sound relationships with other staff and customers
  • Liaise closely with the Editors of journals in the list, and assist in developing these journals to their full potential
  • Ensure that the journals are completed on time and in budget and to the reasonable expectations of associated societies and Editors in accordance with agreed business and performance management plans
  • Ensure that the Editors are kept fully appraised of all activities in relation to the journals
  • Liaise closely with colleagues responsible for marketing the journals and generating advertising and special sales revenue and ensure that clients are kept fully informed
  • Liaise closely with the Editorial Offices and Content Management regarding any issues arising during the publication of journals in the list
  • Liaise with staff globally to share and maintain relevant knowledge about the subject areas related to journals in the list


Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Science (any subject), Technology, Engineering or Medicine subjects background is desired. The candidate must be computer literate and proficient with word processing (MS Word) and spreadsheet (MS Excel) computer applications, as well as internet use for searching and research
  • Demonstrated effective organization skills are essential including the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously
  • Strong relationship management skills are essential including the ability to relate successfully to people at all levels of business both externally and internally and to form and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with those people
  • Professional, mature and decisive in approach
  • Demonstrated professional communication in English and Mandarin language (speaking, writing, reading and listening) and presentation skills
  • Willingness to travel nationally and internationally

Position Title: Associate Editor (Section Editor)

Department: In-house Editorial

Manager: Editorial Manager - Bioscience

Working Location: Beijing, China

The Health Sciences editorial group of Wiley is offering a Section Editor – Cancer Biology position for Wiley’s open access journal Cancer Medicine based in our corporate offices in China.


In addition, you will serve as Associate Editor for the open access journal Health Science Reports, a sound science journal that receives cascaded submissions from a large group of supporter journals.


Applicants for the position should have a broad interest in the oncological sciences and should possess a PhD in cancer biology, oncology or related fields. They should be self-motivated, have excellent organizational and communication skills (English and Chinese, written and verbal), and be diplomatic, and flexible. International postdoctoral or academic experience/ industrial research experience and/or previous publishing experience would be advantageous.


Job Scope and Responsibilities:

  • Be part of a global editorial team responsible for steering the scientific, operational and strategic delivery of the journal. You will collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editor, Associate Editors in Cancer Biology, and existing Editorial office to ensure an exceptional publishing service for authors
  • Assess submitted research papers to the section Cancer Biology of Cancer Medicine on scientific and technical merit and manage the peer-review procedures for these manuscripts as handling editor or along with other associate editors
  • Be responsible for development of journal content and contact with authors and referees from all over the world through commissioning and customer-facing activities
  • As part of a cancer-focused subject team, be dedicated to improving the competitive position of Wiley’s oncology program more broadly, including the management of a dedicated Wiley Oncology WeChat account, and contributing to increased recognition and value of Wiley’s product and service offerings in the community
  • For Health Science Reports, you will assess submissions from supporter journals, making acceptance/rejection decisions, including soliciting additional referee reports and commissioning where necessary. In collaboration with other Wiley staff and the external Editor, you will ensure the smooth functioning of the cascading and publication process

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in cancer biology, clinical genetics, oncology or related field
  • Experience in handling peer-review processes/independent decision making/conflict resolution
  • Knowledge of the ethical issues important in peer-review and of the financial drivers in journal publishing
  • Proficiency in content acquisition techniques
  • Familiarity and networked with the relevant author and referee communities
  • Strong negotiation/interpersonal skills to interact effectively with editors, authors, and noted scientific authorities
  • Excellent planning and negotiation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Good networking skills and presentation skills
  • Highly motivated and achievement oriented
  • Excellent command of the English language and familiarity with social media tools

Position Title: Manager/Senior Manager, Strategic Partnership

Department: Government Affairs

Manager: Senior Director, Government Affairs, China

Working Location: Beijing, China

The Government Affairs team of Wiley is seeking a Manager, Strategic Partnership to lead the engagement with potential local partners with government background, develop project strategy, an operation plan and build up strategic partnership with local operators and government stakeholders. Based in Beijing, the manager will report to the Senior Director, Government Affairs - China, and work cross-functionally with editorial, strategy, products, marketing, sales and other stakeholders.

Job Scope and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing strategy plans and business growth initiatives in the Research and Education fields in China
  • Build data-driven, scenario-based analysis / modelling work to provide insight into market trends, competitive positioning and evaluate the business impact of strategic partnerships
  • Coordinate project management across multiple business units by setting project plans, tracking progress against established timelines and collecting inputs from multiple stakeholders
  • Providing strategic, operational, and analytical support to help manage and grow partnership
  • Maintain excellent partner communications and relationship management while constantly working to improve performance and identifying additional growth opportunities
  • Research, identify and develop potential strategic partnerships with government ensuring Wiley's interest and alignment with government priority
  • Help to expand and enhance relationships with government stakeholders in publishing, science, technology and education fields
  • Execute government engagement plan and establish Wiley as a trusted and collaborative partner for the Chinese government, funders and research community
  • As the main POC, assist in potential partner screening and engagement, including setting agendas and running update meetings

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • College degree (B.A) required. Advanced degree (preferred)
  • Approximately 5 to 7 years of experience of developing complex partnerships successfully in the fields of publishing and education(preferred)
  • Proven track record in negotiating complex agreements
  • Excellent project management skills in areas including development of project operation plan, understanding & executing agreements, workstream requirements, road maps to ensure mutually beneficial partner relationships. (experience in academic publishing industry an advantage)
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in research and analysis (e.g. synthesizing internal data into actionable insights, building strategic plans and financial models) 
  • Strong initiative, drive, ownership and ability to collaborate across teams, proactively manage timelines and ensure projects are being driven forward 
  • Strong storytelling and slide-writing, ability to develop presentations for varied audiences
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and listening skills
  • Strong problem solving and analytics skills
