Dear CUSBEANs

As you have heard, our beloved Professor Gu Xiaocheng passed away at 11:15 am on November 3rd.  She was 82 years old.  The arrangement for her memorial service at Peking University is pending on her daughters arrival from the US.

Professor Gu has lived a beautiful life as a mother, wife, scientist and our friend.  She has held a high spirit and sharp mind until the end of her life.  The upcoming 3rd Ray Wu Symposium will be dedicated to celebrating her life.  Please join us in person or in spirit.  If you have any pictures of Professor Gu, please share with us.  We will present them in a slide show.

Best regards,

Xiao-Hong Sun

On behalf of the RWMF

Dear All,

I am very sad to inform you that Prof. Xiaocheng Gu passed away yesterday in Beijing.

I visited Prof. Gu the day before yesterday (on Friday, Nov. 2). She was in a good  spirit and we talked for quite a while. She is very proud that the CUSBEA fellows formed a community (unlike those from other similar programs). Her last words to the CUSBEA fellows, which might be Professor Ray Wu's, are that we the CUSBEA fellows should form a united community and try to help each other when possible.

Professor Gu was ill, A few  of our  CUSBEA fellows (including Junying Yuan, Xiao-Hong Sun and Hong Wu As far as I know)visited her either in the hospital or at her home.

I am sure Professors Ray Wu and Xiaocheng Gu will be remembered by us all.

Too many fond memories of Prof. Gu.  She will always be remembered for her kindness, integrity, and her devotion to CUSBEA and higher education in China.

Dear all:

I am so sorry to hear about the bad news.  I visited Prof. Gu in mid-Sept.

at her home in Beijing.  It felt like yesterday!?  She looked the usual

elegant, dignified and beautiful self.   Her face was still 20 years

younger than her age (except her arms were skin and bones), and her eyes still shining with sparkles whenever we talked about some old cusbea classmates.  What most remarkable was her unbelievable memory.  She remembered every cusbea student in Boston, even their spouses (e.g., Liu, Zhongchi and Lv, Zhe), and we were both happy to get reconnected with Chen, Wei...  She even remembered some details of my interview with Dr.

and Ms. Karnovsky in beijing in 1981! I bet she remembered every and each cusbea student.

A remarkable person, achieved remarkably in a remarkable time, and set up a remarkable example for all of us. I can not imagine the cusbea program without her dedication, and her remarkable ability to deal with both the Chinese and US bureaucracies.

Unfortunately I will not be able to attend this year's meeting, but I am sure she will be fondly remembered by our fellow cusbeans, and her life be celebrated by all at the meeting in Hangzhou.

Best regards,

Su, Lishan

I visited Prof Gu on Sept 10, 2012.  She was in great spirit with a sharp mind and still cared about if I was considering collaboration with the Institute of Molecular Medicine at Peking University.  I regret so much that I had not reported to her in time that we just co-organized with this institute a Drug Discovery & Translational Research Forum at Peking University last Wednesday (Oct 31, 2012) with good discussions about potential collaboration.  Prof Gu would have been happy to know this progress.  I hope I can fulfill her wish in the near future.

Very unfortunately, I’m unable to attend the CUSBEA Re-union at Ray Wu Memorial Fund (RWMF) symposium in Hangzhou later this week due to a company meeting in Germany, although I really want to participate.  I will send my donation of $2000 for the year of 2012 to Ray Wu Memorial Fund.

I wish the CUSBEA re-union a great success!

Jing-Shan Hu (CUSBEA Class III)

I read the sad news with a heavy heart. Professor Gu means a lot in our lives. I regret not being in touch with most of my fellow CUSBEA alumni and regret not getting in contact with Professor Gu over the past 28 years. Ironically (and thankfully), it was professor Gu's deepening illness and ultimate passing that brought me back to the CUSBEA family and reunited everyone here.

I wish you all to have a wonderful CUSBEA reunion this week in Hangzhou. I will try my very best to attend the next one. If any of you live or pass through the San Francisco Bay area, please let me know. I would love to get together with you in the near future.

My very best wishes,

Bingfang Huan
