recommendations for clinical care

obtain information regarding frequency  and parent management

health care professionals should specifically ask parents how often the child engages in the behavior and what,if any, methods they have used to try to eliminate the behavior.

consider developmental factors

health care professionals need to determine the ages of all children involved in the sexual behavior, establish if the behavior is normative for the child's specific age range, and assess if the child's social functioning is negatively affected by the behavior.

assess level of harm

when interviewing parents and/or children, health care professionals should inquire about the dynamics of the play, emotions involved or elicited, and whether physical harm or intrusion has occurred.

use a standardized,norm-referenced measure

the results from a standardized norm-referenced measure allow health care professionals to assess an overall level of sexual behaviors that a  child exhibits,as well as determin if there are behaviors that are considered abnormal for his or her age and sex.

assess home environment

evaluate for a history of sexual abuse

it is imperative that health care professionals properly assess if the child has been a victim of sexual abuse, although realizing that many children who have been sexually abused do not exhibit PBS.

notify appropriate authorities if maltreatment is suspected

PBS may be related to several types of maltreatment, including sexual abuse, physical abuse, domestic violence in the home, and inadequate supervision.

if maltreatment is suspected, health care professionals who work with children have an ethical and legal obligation to report their concerns of maltreatment to child protective services.the also should follow maltreatment reporting polices established by the clinic and/or hospital where they work.

refer child to mental health services

refer family to mental health services

provide reassurance and psychoeducation
