Special Issue on: "Computational Thinking and theDevelopment of Complex Systems"
Guest Editor:
Dr. Yinong Chen, Arizona State University, USA
Abstraction has been applied for representing a complexsystem in hierarchical layers, with a higher layer hiding certain informationfrom a lower layer. The progress in information, computing, and communicationsystems takes the abstraction concept further to the computational thinkingmodel for system design and implementation using a top-down approach, whichinclude an architecture-driven approach, model-driven development, andworkflow-based design process.
The architecture-driven approach, model-drivendevelopment, and workflow-based design process start from the architecturedesign of a complex system, including the major components and theinterconnections among the components. The next step is to define the interfaceof each component and the workflow within each component. Many workflowdevelopment tools today allow the refinement of work and the compilation of theworkflow into executable. This development style greatly supports computationalthinking, allowing the system architects focus on the functionalities, insteadof the implementation details.
