Applications are invited for a position of bioinformatics and computationalbiology in the Department ofBiological Sciences at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. The Departmentspecialises in the molecular biosciences and currently has 17 academic staffand over 200 students.

The successful applicant will establish and lead a productive researchprogram in the areas of bioinformatics/computational biology that providesresearch opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students. Specificresearch areas of interest for this position include but are not limited tomedical/health informatics, genomics and systems biology including sequenceanalysis, network topology, structural modelling, phylogenetics, geneexpression, evolution, population genetics, and microbiomics. Analysis of otherdatasets such as genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics,epigenomics, etc. and experience of developing and applying mathematical &statistical theory, models, techniques and other analytical methods asappropriate to the field of research are also of interest.  Applicantsshould have good teaching experience and evidence of the ability to producehigh quality research publications. Candidates for the position of AssociateProfessor should have a strong track record in teaching and academicsupervision, as well as an international research profile in their fields and asuccessful record of research funding. Experience in developing and managingMasters programmes would also be well regarded.

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a unique collaborativeinstitution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer bothUK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accreditedundergraduate degrees. Formed in 2006, the first cohort of students graduatedin August 2010. The University now has over 10,000 students studying on campus.The language of instruction in Years 2 to 4 is English. XJTLU aims to becometruly research-led, and has recently committed significant investment intoresearch development and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus.

The Department of Biological Sciences focuses on molecular bioscience andhas recruited faculty from globally distinguished institutions working in thisdiscipline. Although relatively new, the Department is already establishing asolid reputation, as indicated by the growing number of grant awards to itsstaff (e.g. from the National Natural Science Foundation of China) and nationaland international research collaborations (e.g. with Novartis and Unileverplc). It has state-of-the-art instrumentation housed in custom-built labs, andwith excellent technical support. Staff also benefit from the fact that Suzhouis a biomedical ‘hot-spot’ – Cold Spring Harbor Asia (http://www.csh-asia.org/index.html)is located within walking distance and there is a major concentration ofbiotechnology companies in BioBay (http://en.biobay.com.cn/main/index.asp).Current research areas include: cell signalling; chemical biology; cancerbiology; molecular microbiology; neuroscience; proteomics, virology andbioinformatics. The Department currently offers an undergraduate, master’s andPhD degree programme in both biological sciences and bioinformatics.

XJTLU is located in the Science & Education Innovation District ofSuzhou Industrial Park (SIP), well-connected via nearby airports to cities suchas Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, and Taipei, and via high-speed rail to other majorcities in China. SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by nearlyone-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. Greater Suzhou is now thefourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP($233 billion in 2016). The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of bothold and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals, UNESCO WorldHeritage Site gardens, and the I.M Pei-designed Suzhou Museum attractingmillions of tourists annually. SIP offers an excellent quality of life. Thenearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views, by day and by night, and there area variety of shopping facilities, international and local restaurants,entertainment hubs and a great nightlife.  Suzhou is also home to four internationalschools.

The salary range for the Lecturer positions (equivalent to AssistantProfessor in the US system) is 26,454 – 32,412 RMB/month (Lecturer), and 32,904– 38,894 RMB/month for Associate Professor I positions. In addition, members ofacademic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medicalinsurance, and relocation expenses. Overseas staff may receive a tax “holiday”of up to three years, depending on where they have previously been domiciledand personal circumstances.
