Summer Fete

In England, almost every school has its Summer Fete every summer. It’s an event for people related to the school such as students, teachers, parents, siblings and other family members to have some fun together under the lovely summer sunshine (not always available though due to the typical un-predictable English weather). And at the same time, it’s one of the biggest fund raising events too. In my children’s school, there is no exception and every year, the Fete is enjoyed by all who turn up for the occasion!
For the second year running, I was in charge of the Bouncy Castle in the Fete on Saturday and I must say it was hard work yet extremely rewarding. Bouncy Castle was a castle inflatable made of strong rubber plastic. The children could bounce up and down on it safely. We had two castles this year, one for the small children up to 5 years old and the other for elder kids up to 11. A couple of professionals supervised one of the castles and I had 7 mums volunteered to man the other in turns. With a simple Rota system, it worked out just fine. We “worked” in pairs with one person taking care of the money and the other supervising the kids. Each pair manned the castle for half hour and then the next pair took over. The children had great fun and we raised lots of money in less than two hours.

During the Fete, there were many other events and sale stores too, including cakes, books, toys, plants, and lots of games. For this year, some of the money raised would be donated to the Red Cross for the earthquake relief effort, which made me even more proud of being involved in doing this.
By the way, it is the Father’s Day today (Sunday, 15 June 2008) - so, Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads and Daddy-in-laws on ScienceNet!!!
