Benjamin Kipphouse, ca.1735. 335 Douglas Road.
About 1778, George Washington commissioned surveys and aset of maps of roads used by his troops in Westchester. One of the maps includes parts of what are now King Street, Quaker Road, Kipp Street, Douglas Road, Hardscrabble Road, and Briarcliff Road. At the corner of Douglasand Hardscrabbler oads is a house labeled Benj. Kipp. This was the originalKipp farmhouse, a very small one-and-a-half-story shingled house, with just adoor and a single front window on the first floor, and small eyebrow windows onthe second. It was substantially enlarged in 1957, but photographs taken beforeand during the alteration, together with the architect’s plans, make itrelatively easy to track the history of the building from its original form. Itwas probably typical of the modest homes built by the Chappaqua pioneers, whohad little time or inclination to build more than basic shelters for theirfamilies as they transformed wilderness into farmland.
The house remained in the Kipp family until the early20th century. In the early 1800s century itwas the home of an unmarriedgrandson of Benjamin’s, also named Benjamin(1764-1849). It then belonged toCharles C. Kipp (1812-1867), and his wife Antoynette Washburn Kipp (1818-1870).The last family member to own and occupy the house was Charles and Antoynette’s daughter Wilhelmina KippSarles(1844-1913), the widow of Samuel Sarles (1833-1908). All thesedescendants, and probably Benjamin himself, are buried in the Quaker graveyardin Chappaqua.
今天上午,我们来到经常路过而不知就是1735年历史民居的Benjamin Kipp house参观,并拍摄外景照片24张。
