Thank you for your interest in The Speyer Legacy School. The start of the new school year has brought with it the excitement of movinginto a new building. The versatility, design, and size of our new home is atestament to the dedication and hard work that has grown our community from a2-room school in 2009 to a K-7 institution of nearly 250 amazing students, over50 talented faculty and staff, and a myriad of innovative programs andservices.
From the day we opened our doors in 2009, our journey hasbeen a thrilling one as the only independent co-educational K-8 school in Manhattan established tomeet the needs of advanced learners. Our goal to revitalize the vision createdin 1936 with the establishment of The Speyer School (one of the first programsto identify and serve children with exceptional learning abilities) is beingrealized daily in busy classrooms as we grow our school. Our experience withadvanced learners and the resulting recognition that they acquire knowledge andmaster concepts at a much faster pace than other children their age has fueledthe creation of an accelerated and enriched curriculum designed to meet theirneeds and stretch their abilities. Thus, students attending The Speyer LegacySchool are given the gift of the time and opportunity to cultivate a range ofhigher level cognitive skills and meaningful relationships with intellectuallycompatible peers. We are delighted to be only one year away from a completemiddle school program and first graduating class, and look forward withanticipation to the further development and realization of the Speyer Legacymodel.
Like Leta Hollingworth, whose early work informs ourvision, we believe that gifted children benefit from an education with theirintellectual peers and appropriately trained teachers, and that they displaylearning profiles that may not be adequately supported in a traditionalclassroom setting. These children derive the greatest benefit from formaleducation when they are empowered to become active participants, capable ofdirecting their own learning in an environment that is responsive to theirinterests, attentive to their questions and supportive of their passion tolearn.
We invite you to explore our approach, our programs, andthe dedicated people ready to welcome advanced learners and their families intoour community.
