回信就是一个response，他怎么问，你怎么答。这与“自洽的系统”没有关系，也就是爱因斯坦回信要跟J.S. Switzer信对应。所以，对爱因斯坦回信的解读，最好是设想J.S. Switzer在信中问了些什么？

为什么爱因斯坦信要分两段，第二段是不是狗尾续貂？第一段是爱因斯坦立论的依据，也是爱氏高屋建瓴的回信谋篇布局。第二段才是真正对J.S. Switzer问题的回答。

我的观点已在《推测J.S. Switzer给爱因斯坦的信中写了些什么》中讲过。下面我再申论一下。

对此信的解读，根据第一句的第一个词“Development of Western science”和后面提到的“the Chinese sages have not made those steps.”，表明此信大概问的是“为什么中国没有产生西方那种科学发现？”那么，“those discoveries”和“those steps”都是指“西方那种科学发现”，而不是指“two great achievements（两项重大成就）”。因为西方科学不等于这形式逻辑和系统实验两项，形式逻辑和系统实验这两项伟大成就只是基础，准确地说是方法论。

按照有人说的：

Development of Western science is based on two great achievements: the invention of the formal logical system (in Euclidean geometry) by the Greek philosophers, and the discovery of the possibility to find out causal relationships by systematic experiment (during the Renaissance).

In my opinion one has not to be astonished that the Chinese sages have not made those steps. The astonishing thing is that those discoveries were made at all.

“those steps”和“those discoveries”都是指上文的“two great achievements（两项重大成就）”。那么，难道J.S. Switzer问的是为什么中国没有产生形式逻辑和系统实验两项成就？显然不大可能。而且爱氏也用不着提“Development of Western science”。而且，“希腊能产生欧氏几何或形式逻辑，欧洲能发现系统实验方法，中国为什么不能？”这样的问题，爱氏不可能说“In my opinion one has not to be astonished that the Chinese sages have not made those steps.”否则，等于没说出什么道理来，或者言下之意就成了“中国人人种不行，希腊人和欧洲人才行”或者诸如此类的想法，想必受过纳粹迫害的爱因斯坦不会如此想。
