肥胖是全世界的一个主要问题，自1975年以来，肥胖人数几乎翻了三倍。世界卫生组织的数据显示，超过19亿成年人超重，其中6.5亿人肥胖。肥胖不仅会扩大腰围，有害的身体脂肪也会增加痴呆和中风的风险。
通过对大约28000人的大脑灰质进行检查，表明身体脂肪的增加逐渐导致大脑灰质萎缩，从而增加大脑健康下降的风险。

根据剑桥大学和卡罗林斯卡学院研究人员发表在《PLOS Medicine》杂志上的一项新研究，肥胖增加了消化系统癌症发展的风险，而脂肪的质量，而不是体积，是这些癌症类型的主要肥胖相关危险因素。高BMI的遗传倾向(Genetic predisposition)与消化系统癌症风险增加相关，尤其是肝癌、胃癌、食管癌和胰腺癌，但与总体癌症风险增加无关。消化系统癌症风险的增加主要归因于影响脂肪质量的基因。
