在美国化学学会（ACS）发表的一项研究中，卡内基梅隆大学（Carnegie Mellon University）绿色科学研究所（IGS）的研究人员发现一种强大、安全、廉价的氧化催化剂，这种催化剂是受我们体内生物过程的启发而产生的，即使是最顽固的微污染物也能清除。

“这可能是我们20年来发表的最重要的论文，”绿色化学的特蕾莎·海因茨教授特伦斯·J·柯林斯（Teresa Heinz）说，他是IGS的负责人。

柯林斯从新西兰的本科生时代起就一直关注合成化学物质的有害生物效应，他在过去40年中一直致力于开发利用氧化过程将这些化学物质从水中去除的方法。
