McPhetres发现,敬畏感(feeling awe)会促使我们对我们不知道的事情提高认识,这反过来使我们更有可能寻找一个框架来填补这些空白。科学就是这样一个框架。
用外行的话来说,敬畏可以理解为一种类似于惊奇或好奇的情绪,通常与宏伟或伟大有关。
对麦克菲特来说——借鉴了先前在该领域的研究——敬畏(awe )包括两个核心特征:对浩瀚的感知和对适应的需求。也就是说,当我们遇到不符合我们现有期望框架的信息时,我们必须改变现有的模式以适应新的信息(the perception of vastness and the need for accommodation. That is to say, when we encounter information that does not fit into our existing framework of expectations, we must change our existing schemas in order to accommodate this new information.)。
