阿尔伯特·爱因斯坦在阅读了18世纪苏格兰哲学家的著作后，受到启发提出了相对论。

爱丁堡大学新发现的一封信显示，这位出生于德国的理论物理学家在1905年提出狭义相对论之前，研究了大卫休谟的《人性论（A Treatise of Human Nature）》。

突破性的理论认为，即使观察者加速或减速，光速仍然保持不变，这表明时间和空间因此不能是恒定的。

然而，休谟首先质疑空间和时间是否确实是固定的、相互独立的，并要求进一步的科学研究来查明。

休谟在1738年出版的《人性论》中写道：“The chief objection against all abstract reasoning is derived from the ideas of Space and Time. Ideas in everyday life may appear clear and intelligible, but when they pass through the scrutiny of the profound Sciences...they seem full of absurdity and contradiction.”

1915年12月，爱因斯坦在写给维也纳物理学教授莫里茨·施立克的信中承认，正是休谟的著作启发了广义相对论。

“你已经正确地看到，这一思路对我的努力有很大的影响，的确是恩斯特·马赫，更重要的是休谟，他关于理解的论述（An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding？），我在发现相对论之前，曾热切地、钦佩地研究过。（You have correctly seen that this line of thought was of great influence on my efforts and indeed Ernst Mach and still much more Hume, whose treatise on understanding I studied with eagerness and admiration shortly before finding relativity theory.）”

他接着写道：“没有这些哲学研究，我很有可能不会提出解决办法来。（It is very possible that without these philosophical studies I can not say that the solution would have come）”
