Iselin, NJ - Environmental performance is a major theme for DAF Trucks at this year’s European Road Transport Show, and BASF catalysts will be featured as important components of DAF’s emissions-control systems. DAF will display a range of truck models that meet stringent Euro 4 and 5 emissions standards at the Show, which will be held from Oct. 26 to Nov. 3, 2007 at the RAI in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
DAF’s Euro 5 vehicles are among the first to meet the new standards, which take effect beginning in 2009. When compared with the Euro 1 standard, these vehicles emit approximately 75 percent less nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 94 percent less particulate matter.
BASF Catalysts worked closely with DAF to develop a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system that meets the NOx standards and is economical to operate. BASF’s SCR catalyst is now in commercial use on DAF models XF105, CF85, and CF75. The XF105 recently was voted ‘International Truck of the Year 2007’ by a jury of journalists from leading European trade publications, and more than 60,000 have been sold.
SCR is one of several technology platforms BASF has developed to meet the significant growing demand for emission-control technologies resulting from the phase-in of more stringent heavy-duty diesel regulations around the world. The SCR catalyst comprises a catalytically active component coated on a ceramic honeycomb. When a reductant, such as the AdBlue® urea solution by BASF, is added to the system, the catalyst promotes a chemical reaction that converts NOx into water and nitrogen.
BASF Catalysts originally pioneered SCR technology in the late 1960s for stationary-source applications, such as power-generating and industrial manufacturing facilities. The company continues to be a major supplier to the stationary-source market.
BASF Catalysts also supplies DAF Trucks with diesel oxidation catalysts, which are featured on DAF’s new EEV engines to help reduce particulate emissions. These engines also will be on display at the European Transport Show. DAF’s will be in the Europahal at stand number 01.002.
