My friend J loves Hawaii, and is able to visit yearly. Considering that she lives in NH, you can tell her love for Hawaii is BIG.
When J comes to visit, we always get together for lunch or dinner. This time, she was able to "drag" us to the other side of the island, which seems like another island to some of us who live in HNL. At dinner, she talked about her two kids, who were little when I first met them more than 20 years ago in FL. Miss M is a graduate student now, and she loves animals. However, she had a problem: Her rat Khloe was dying from cancer. The vet wanted USD250 to euthanize her, and Miss M could not afford to pay such a high fee. So, I suggested to call the Humane Society.
Today, J emailed me a picture of Miss M with khloe. She wrote: "[Miss M] was very grateful for the suggestion to try the Humane Society for Khloe. As you can see from the photo at this site, she and Khloe were very close. They euthanized her and [Miss M] brought her body home so her sister, Zoe, could say good bye and understand that [Khloe] had died. (BTW- [Miss M] says rats show more empathy than the Republican party!)."
I was so moved by Miss M's love for animals, especially when the pet is a rat (and I am a rat).
