Getting a non-smoking (hotel) room is hard in China...

Here are two examples.

1) At a 4-star hotel in Qingdao some years ago, I noticed ash trays in my room. So, I called the front desk and complained. A young lady (staff) looked at me as if I were from Mars: "It's a non-smoking room, IF you don't smoke!"

2) I requested a non-smoking room at Wenhua Hotel (Culture Plaza Hotel) in Hangzhou, but none was available when I checked in. With some effort, I got a non-smoking room for the second night. I noticed the floor is not a non-smoking floor, so I avoid to use the central A/C. This morning, at 6 am, I smelled strong cigarette in my room.I thought it was from the open windows (on the 15th floor), so I quickly shut them. It didn't help. I was puzzled. So, I played detective. It turned out my non-smoking room (with a sign on the door) is CONNECTED to the next room with a door; and that room has no sign on the door; so the guest in there enjoyed his morning smoke and generously shared his smoke with me. Now he is gone (checked out), and I am still smoking his left-over.
