“科学网大学”英文服务中心: Some thoughts on “广播电视大学学报走向国际化”
by Zuojun Yu
1) As a first step, including English abstracts and key words are fine. As a next step, including English captions would be useful.
2) Some of the Chinese abstracts themselves are not well written, or very dry (abstract to the point that you have no idea what the paper is about.)
3) After having edited all 17 abstracts myself, I see three types of English abstracts.
i) Some are excellent.
ii) Some are translated
by English majored “translators.” That
means “hit or miss” depending on the topic.
iii) Some are very Chinglish, which is very hard to fix. In particular, that means run-on sentences, or very long sentences, to the extreme of having only one or two sentences for the whole abstract.
4) Since the content of such journal is very broad, from Chinese literature to bilingual teaching, it’s difficult to find one English editor to edit all the abstracts. So, I would suggest that several similar journals work together, to share a few freelancer English editors that can cover at least literature, social sciences, and natural sciences.
