Quite a few people have sinus problems, but I didn’t think I would experience it myself. In November 2008, I suffered daily headache for nearly two weeks. In the past, I would have headache for a day or two, but often no more than three days in a roll. This time, I felt I needed some medical help, since I was going to take a long trip (from Hawaii to South America) and I didn’t want to fall ill in a foreign country.
My doctor at Kaiser examined me, and found nothing apparently wrong. So, she said: “I suspect that your headache is caused by sinus infection.” “Sinus infection? But, I have no running nose…” She was confident, and didn’t even order further tests. She gave me antibiotics for 10 days (amoxicillin), and also asked me to use a nasal spray (Fluticasone Propionate) daily.
In my own experience, there are two illnesses that doctors cannot help: headache and rash. However, to my surprise I felt my head was “enlightened” the second day after having started the antibiotics! I was so happy and had a wonderful time in Argentina.
I am not a person who likes medicines; I don’t even like vitamins or calcium pills! So, I decided to stop the nightly nasal spray. My experiment failed miserably. About a week later, my head became congested and my headache returned. I called my doctor and asked if I needed to get another round of antibiotics. She said: “Start your nasal spray first. If your condition is not improved in a few days, we will use antibiotics then.” I was lucky: the headache went away. I continue to live a quasi-normal life (not as normal as I would prefer, because I have to use the spray religiously).
Note that the nasal spray does not cure infection, but it prevents sinus infection from happening by opening one's airways (correct me if I am wrong).
I hope this real-life experience can help someone who suffers similar symptoms. However, I am not a medical doctor, and my suggestion is you go visit a professional doctor and ask if you could try these medications I mentioned above.
