我的“三条红线”

     许多年前,我给自己定下了“三条红线”:

     1)不申请或接受国内的任何奖项;

     2)不申请或接受国内的任何人才计划;

     3)不申请或接受任何形式的国家科研经费。

     从1999年起,就有内地高校邀请我申请“长江学者”;我从来没有申请过,守住了红线。

     在港科大任教时,有多位内地学者邀请我一起申请“联合杰青”;我没有申请,守住了红线。

     到西交大国科大工作之后,我没有申请过任何形式的国家科研经费,没有申请过任何奖项,当然也没有申请过任何形式的人才计划,守住了红线。

     我相信,我能够一生坚守,到老的时候,可以自豪地说:“我是独立的知识分子,我做到了!”


     当然,我明白,对于生活在现实中的广大知识分子来说,守住这“三条红线”是非常困难的。所以,我觉得,只要不是主动地攀权附贵、不把“三条红线”当做“三面红旗”来炫耀,就算守住了知识分子的最终底线。即,

Dr. Joseph Ecker is a Professor of Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory and Director of the Genomic Analysis Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. He is also an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Prof. Ecker holds the Salk International Council Chair in Genetics. For nearly 25 years, Dr. Ecker has been at the forefront of research to decode the genome of Arabidopsis thaliana, a mustard weed that has become the gold standard of plant research. He was a leader of the international effort to sequence all of Arabidopsis which was completed in 2000. More recently, Dr. Ecker has turned to deciphering the epigenome, the layer of molecular tweaks that act on DNA to turn genes on and off. The genetic reference books developed by Ecker and his colleagues may have enormous practical uses in crop engineering. This work is also showing that the complicated genetic underpinnings of plants and humans are more similar than common perception. Dr. Ecker has received a number of honors for his notable contributions to the field of plant biology. In a study TIME magazine ranked Dr. Ecker and his team闁炽儲鐛� work to provide the first detailed map of the human genome, as the second most important scientific discovery of 2009. In 2011, he received the George W. Beadle Medal for his outstanding contributions to the genetics community. His other accolades include National Academy of Sciences, John J. Carty Award for the Advancement of Science; the Martin Gibbs Medal; the International Plant Growth Substances Association Distinguished Research Award; and the Kumho Science International Award in Plant Molecular Biology.
