In order to understand and improve the air quality in a given city/region,the user can use the simulation platform software, provided by ESDV to you, tocalculate the air pollutant levels, caused by motor vehicle emissions onspecified, partial and main highways and arterial streets under differentmeteorological and transportation conditions, including small wind speeds,traffic jams and other unfavorable situations. It is also possible for the userto calculate and predict the air pollutant levels, according to thecity/region’s development planning, different motor vehicle operation schemes,pollution control programmers and emission reduction schemes to obtain refinedquantitative results, such as the concentration distribution fields ofpollutants under different meteorological and operating conditions. The inputroadway links of the developed simulation platform software (<=2500) areeither the so-called ‘free flow links’ without the control of traffic lights,or the so-called ‘queue links’ with the control of traffic lights, on whichmotor vehicles should be idling for a specified period of time. In general, theidling vehicles on the roadways less 305 miter (1000feet) from the receptorlocations have larger contributions to the calculated results; these roads,however, should be treated as queue links. The simulation platform softwaredivides meteorological stability into six classes (i.e., Pasquill stabilityclass scheme), each time the user can calculate according to 10 differentmeteorological conditions. Here a certain specified meteorological conditionmeans that the user can set up to 36 wind direction angles at most under givenstability class and wind speed. This function of simulation platform softwareallows users to make 360 degrees’ engineering testing with 10 degrees’ winddirection increment angle.

In addition, the developed simulation platform software still provides theanalyzer for users to specially analyze and compare the calculated results. Acalculation of simulation platform software can conveniently provide the valuesof pollutant concentration at several spatial points (<=60) pre-pointed bythe user, including the contributions of roadway links to each value and thecomparisons between these concentration values, and also can provide thepollutant concentration field at a certain height (such as the breathingheight) under a specified meteorological condition as well as the analysisfunction for any local rectangular are a within the calculated concentrationfield. Using this function, users are able to obtain the concentrationcharacteristic values in any rectangular local region, including the maximum,minimum and mean concentration values at current wind direction angle and themaximum, minimum and mean concentration values for all wind direction averageunder current meteorological condition. These functions, mentioned above, areextremely useful for environmental and health departments to analyze thedecline in air quality at local region, caused by traffic transportation, andto carry out appropriate study, such as pathology research, etc. Due to thenumber limitation of expensive environmental observation stations and theimpossibility to identify the traffic pollution amount from measured totalpollutant data on site, environmental monitoring departments also need to usethe simulation platform software, in association with the observations on site,referenced each other. For example, the simulation platform software canclearly display the harder-hit area of traffic pollutionat current meteorological, this function is conductive to arrange movable andimmobile monitoring stations, and then not only to reduce the labor intensityon-site and also to improve the precision and efficiency of monitoring andforecasting.

It is great significant to make and apply the simulation platform softwarefor modeling, predicting and analyzing motor vehicle exhaust emission in specificurban district. With the help of this software, it is possible to predict airpollutant levels, to ensure the living environmental quality for residents, andto elevate the urban administration level as well as its sustainabledevelopment ability. Of course, building simulation platform software is alsoone of important tasks for constructing smart city. Usingthe simulation platform software, developed by ESDV, in combination with theon-site observation of pollutant concentrations, can carry out a series ofapplied studies, such as:

·tocalculate the pollutant contributions from some specific highways and arterialstreets;

·to analyze the effects of motor vehicle exhaust emission on the health ofvulnerable and sensitive crowds (such as in kindergarten, primary and secondaryschools, hospitals, rest homes, etc.);

·to quantitatively analyze the effect of using clean energy vehicles on theefficiency of city emission reduction;

·to discover the harder-hit areas of traffic pollution;

·and also enable to evaluate and forecast the air quality, in association withthe urban development planning.

Inshort, the simulation platform software, developed by ESDV, is a valuable numerical tool, closely linked to publicinterest and gladly adopted by vast users.
