上周四，常青藤盟校的一个经济学家在飞机上玩儿微分方程，被邻座妇人当成阿拉伯文密码，于是经济学家成了恐怖分子嫌疑人，航班因此耽误两个小时。（见华盛顿邮报， League economist ethnically profiled, interrogated for doing mathon American Airlines flight）

   对政治家来说，故事与种族有关，因为哪位经济学家样子有点儿“异类”（ethnically profiled）：with dark, curlyhair, olive skin and an exotic foreign accent，wearing navy Diesel jeans and a red Lacoste sweater，邻座的女子（a blond-haired, 30-something woman sporting flip-flops and a redtote bag）总感觉他有什么不对，又见他写写画画，像密码似的，于是机警地给机组打了小报告……

   那人是Guido Menzio，意大利人（所以确实other-ish），是宾州大学的经济学家，去年获Carlo Alberto奖章。

文章作者Catherine Rampell感慨，这个真实的“寓言”告诉我们，在美国，比异族更可怕的还是数学。（That in America today, the only thing more terrifying thanforeigners is…math.）

刚才又看见一篇文章说，在电脑屏幕上阅读，会让你关注细节却忽略大意（Reading something on a screen -- as opposed to a printout --causes people to home in on details and but not broader ideas）。多关心细节也好，“大意”留待网下慢慢思考吧。
