希腊精神还留下什么？从昨天的全民公决看，至少还留下一点“修辞术”，也就是亚里士多德前辈定义的那种“在任何情况下都能找到说服办法的能力”：the faculty of observing in any given case the available means ofpersuasion（或译作，anability, in each [particular] case, to see the available means of persuasion）。

投票上印着这样一个文绉绉（jargon-saturated）的问题：

  如此问题很妙，很“温柔敦厚”，不像其他地方的公投那么燃萁煮豆。不论yes或no都还有谈判的余地。正如一个希腊艺术家说的，事情还能坏到哪儿去呢，这正是谈判的好机会（It can’t get any worse than it is now. This will give us a betterchance for negotiations.）
