看梁老师的“磨刀”模型（http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-39446-1015229.html），想起一段数学名言，是生物学家Thomas Huxley说的——1869年，他批评物理学家William Thomson（开尔文勋爵）计算的地球年龄——爵爷根据熔岩流温度梯度计算的地球年龄才1亿年——说，数学如磨，但磨出什么粉，还得看加什么料（很多书引用过这段话，但我没找到原始出处）：

  Mathematics may be compared to a mill of exquisite workmanship which grinds you stuff of any degree of fineness but, nevertheless, what you get out depends upon what you put in, and as the grandest mill in the world will not extract wheat-flour from peasecod, so pages of formulae will not get a definite result out of loose data.

   这段话曾灭了数学的威风，但也只是挫钝了数学的双刃之一。拿数学磨豆腐，当然要上好的东北黄豆；可数学也可以是水车，在丽江古城头不停地旋转。我们今天知道，数学自己转出来的东西远比磨出来的东西多。
