沙漠中的鲜花

    胡佛 (Hoover) 坝位于美国内华达州与亚利桑那州之间的黑峡（Black Canyon）峡谷中，1935年建成，坝高211.6m。该坝是美国综合开发科罗拉多（Colorado）河水资源的一项关键性工程，具有防洪、灌溉、供水、发电与航运等综合效益。

在工程施工过程中，由于各种原因（如中暑、中毒、肺炎和劳累等），共有112人献出了生命。

    为缅怀献身者，在坝区建有一座纪念碑，如下图。

  纪念碑的中间镌刻着:“是他们用生命换来了沙漠中的鲜花”^①。

     纪念碑的左侧镌刻着：“美利坚合众国将永远记住为建设这座大坝奋力苦干而安息在这里的人们”^②。

 纪念碑的右侧镌刻着：“美利坚合众国将永远记住努力使这座大坝的最初建设方案变为现实的人们所作出的贡献”^③。

     在这一纪念碑附近的另一块碑石上，镌刻有这112名献身者的姓名。
