19世纪后期至20世纪初，法兰西医学科学院院士Louis édouard Bureau (1830--1918)是一位著名的植物学家。他主要研究现代植物的分类学，但在晚年也研究了化石植物。
1830年，Louis édouard Bureau出生于法国西部的Nantes。1848年，他在家乡开始学习医学；1853年到巴黎继续学医。1856年，获得医学博士学位。
1872年，Louis édouard Bureau获得自然科学的博士学位。同年，拥有法兰西科学院院士头衔的植物学家、真菌学家Edmond Tulasne (1815--1885)从法国国家自然历史博物馆去职。Louis édouard Bureau有机会加盟该馆著名古植物学、法兰西科学院院士Adolphe-Théodore Brongniart(1801--1876)的实验室，获得助理博物学家的职位。
1874年，Louis édouard Bureau时年44岁。他被任命为从法国国家自然历史博物馆的植物学首席教授。他占据这个重要学术职位长达31年，即：到1905年退休。1906年，Louis édouard Bureau的学术职位由植物学家Paul Henri Lecomte (1856--1934)继任。
Louis édouard Bureau退休后研究法国Loire盆地的植物化石。1910—1914年间发表两卷本古植物学专著：

--1830: Born in Nantes, western France; His father was Louis Auguste Bureau (1800--1848), and his mother was Elise Joseph Lecherf (1805--1855);
--1848: Began to study medicine in Nantes;
--1853: Went to Paris;
--1856: Became a Doctor of Medicine in Paris;
--1858: Married Marie Decroix (1839--1899);
--1872(??): Received the degree of Doctor of Natural Sciences;
--1872: Replaced French botanist and mycologist-- Louis René étienneTulasne, a.k.a. Edmond Tulasne (1815--1885) and became an assistant naturalist at the Natural History Museum in the laboratory of Adolphe-Théodore Brongniart (1801--1876);
--1874--1905: Professor of Botany (or Chair of Botany) at the Natural History Museum inParis,
--1875: Served as a director of the herbariums at the museum;
--1875: Served as one of the founders of the Société entomologiquede France (French Entomological Society) and chairman in 1875, 1883, 1902 and 1905;
--1895--1917: A member of the Comité travaux of the historiques etscientifiques (French Committee for Historical and Scientific Endeavors);
--1901: Elected a member of the Académie Nationale de Médecine;
--1905: Retired and succeeded by Paul Henri Lecomte (1856--1934);
--1910--1914: Published a two-volume work on the fossils of the Loire basin in France;
--1911: Published a further work specifically on the Devonian plants of the Loire basin;
--1918: Died in Paris at age 88.
