Edward Alexander Newall Arber

Sketchy biography: Edward Alexander Newall Arber, British palaeobotanist and geologist, was born in 1870 and he died in 1918. His father was Edward Arber (1836--1912), who was an English academic and writer.

In 1895 Edward Alexander Newall Arber went to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he spent the rest of his life. He got his M.A. and Sc.D. degrees there. It is Professor Thomas McKenny Hughes (1832--1917), a Woodwardian Professor of Geology at Cambridge University, who led Edward Alexander Newall Arber to make study of fossil plants and appointed him Demonstrator in Paeobotany in the Woodwardian (later Sedgwick) Museum in 1899. Edward Alexander Newall Arber worked on the curating and research of the palaeobotanical collections, delivered elementary and advanced lectures and made demonstrations in palaeobotany. He was a prolific researcher of recent and fossil plants (see Appendix1).

In 1909 Edward Alexander Newall Arber got married with Agnes Robertson Arber (1879--1960), who became a British plant morphologist, anatomist historian of botany, and philosopher of biology, and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1946. In 1913 the couple had one child, i.e. Muriel Agnes Arber (1913--2004).

In 1918 Edward Alexander Newall Arber died of illness at age of 48.
