“中国通”--美国科学院院士、植物学家Peter H. Raven

美国植物学家Peter H. Raven（彼得·雷文）1936年出生于中国上海，是一个“中国通”。Peter H. Raven博士是国际植物学界有影响力的科学家、国际生物多样性保护事业的重要领导人。他与古植物学家也有密切联系和合作。

--1960年，Peter H. Raven毕业于加州大学洛杉矶分校(UCLA)，获博士学位，时年24岁。

--1970年，编写了植物学教科书—Plant Biology [《植物生物学》，第1版；2007年出版第7版。该教科书成为国际植物学流行教科书]。

--1971--2011年担任美国密苏里植物园主任，长达40年。在Peter H. Raven的领导下，密苏里植物园已成为国际植物学研究、教育和园艺栽培中心之一。

--1975年，担任美国植物学会主席。

--1977年，当选为美国科学院院士。

--1978年，组织美国植物学会代表团访问中华人民共和国。

--1979年，接待中国植物学会代表团访问美国。

--1987--1999年，担任美国国家科学院内务秘书长(Home Secretary, U.S. National Academy of Sciences)。

--1988年，Peter H. Raven代表美国密苏里植物园与中国科学院签署协议，中美双方开始合作Flora of China（《中国植物志》英文修订版）项目的编研和出版。该项目相继成为中国科学院、中国国家自然科学基金委员会的重大国际合作项目。

--1988—2014年，Peter H. Raven担任Flora of China美方主编。

--1994--2001年，担任美国总统科技顾问委员会委员（President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology, Member）。

--1994年，当选为中国科学院外籍院士。

--2000年，获美国国家科学勋章（克林顿总统授予）(National Medal of Science, presented by President Clinton)。

--2009年，获中国科学院国际科技合作奖。

--2010年，获中国政府授予来华工作外国专家的国家级最高奖项--中华人民共和国友谊奖。

--2011年，Peter H. Raven宣布退休。

Peter H. Raven的科学研究涉及到板块运动及其对生物地理（如间断分布）和植物进化的影响。他和美国著名古植物学家Daniel Isaac Axelrod（1910--1998）等有密切合作，发表了一些论著。

Peter H. Raven和中国科学院院士、古植物学家徐仁先生（1910--1992）有过直接交往。1979年5月，徐仁随中国植物学会代表团第一次访问密苏里植物园。

应Peter H. Raven的邀请，徐仁于1982年9月第二次访问密苏里植物园，主要参加“东亚温带植物和北美植物的来源关系”学术讨论会。徐仁在此次会议上作了利用化石植物（包括化石孢粉）探讨东亚和北美植物间断分布问题的学术报告。
