   20世纪后期美国古植物学界有一位传奇人物,叫Wesley Conrad Wehr(1929--2004)。他是一位有天赋的作曲家,也是知名画家和作家,系“美国西北艺术流派”的代表人物之一(Northwest School of Art)。Wesley C. Wehr在少年时代展露音乐才华,开始音乐创作。1951年和1954年毕业于华盛顿大学音乐专业(University of Washington, Seattle),分别获学士及硕士学位。1960年,Wesley C. Wehr开始微型景观等(miniature landscapes)之绘画创作。

   化石植物属于地质历史时期自然景观的重要组成部分。进入20世纪70 年代,Wesley C. Wehr对古植物学产生浓厚兴趣。他以艺术家的眼光开始化石植物的采集和研究。Wesley C. Wehr的主要研究兴趣是产自北美西部,尤其是“Pacific Northwest”这一地区的世新始植物化石

     1976年,位于西雅图的华盛顿大学Burke 博物馆(The Burke Museum, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington)任命Wesley C. Wehr为专职负责古植物学采集和馆藏的研究人员(an affiliate curator of paleobotany),但没有工资。显然,Wesley C. Wehr不为生计(livelihood)从事古植物学研究。他在这个古植物学专业岗位上坚守了近30年,直到他2004年去世。尤为称道的是:1992年,Wesley C. Wehr为Burke 博物馆进行了个人捐赠,以支持该馆持续开展古植物学研究。

   2003年,Wesley C. Wehr荣获美国古生物学会颁发的“Harrell L. Strimple奖”。

1 生平(Brief life chronology)

--born in Everett, Washington on April 17, 1929;

--1947: entered University of Washington, Seattle;

--1951: B.A.,music, University of Washington, Seattle;

--1954: M.A., music,University of Washington, Seattle;

--1960: began paintings;

--1976: appointed as an affiliate curator of paleobotany at the Burke Museum of Natural Historyand Culture;

--1992:establishment of the Wes Wehr Endowment for Paleobotany to ensure continued support of paleobotanical research at the Burke Museum;

--2003: honored with the Harrell L. Strimple Award from the Paleontological Society;

--died in Seattle, Washington on April 12, 2004.
