早在19世纪末，来自英国的煤矿工程师William Stukeley Gresley美国爱荷华州（Iowa）发现了煤核及所含植物化石。这是北美洲有关煤核植物化石的最早科学报道。

   20世纪60年代，Donald A. Eggert (1934--2010)曾在爱荷华大学植物系短暂工作(The Department of Botany, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa)，但他主要研究产自伊利诺斯州的煤核植物化石。

   1969年，Jeffry Tod Schabilion从堪萨斯大学植物系毕业，获得博士学位，赴爱荷华大学植物系接替Donald A.Eggert的古植物学研究职位。Jeffry T. Schabilion主要研究产自爱荷华州中部的煤核植物化石。

   1978年，Gene Robbins Mapes毕业于爱荷华大学植物系，获得博士学位。毕业后，Gene R. Mapes供职于俄亥俄大学植物系，从事古植物学研究[Department of Botany, Ohio University, Athens, OH;该系已更名为“Department of Environmental & Plant Biology”]。

   1992年，Gene R. Mapes服务美国植物学会古植物学分会，担任主席。参见：
