20世纪中叶，由于生产实际和科研教学的大量需求美国化石孢粉学获得了快速发展，涌现了一大批美国孢粉学家，培养了很多人才。

   美国孢粉学家Gottfried Kurt Guennel (1920--2013)多才多艺。他出生于德国（ Oelsnitz），1934年移居美国。分别于1943年和1949年从印地安纳州的Butler University (Indianapolis, Indiana)获得本科和硕士学位，主修植物学。之后，G. K. Guennel供职于印第安纳地质调查局煤炭研究部（Coal Section of the Indiana Geological Survey）长达11年之久，主要从事煤岩孢粉学研究。期间，他在印第安纳大学（Indiana University,  Bloomington）跟随James E. Canright (1920--2008) 攻读博士学位，于1960年毕业。G.  K. Guennel的博士学位论文主要对印第安纳和俄罗斯纸煤中的成煤植物进行了比较。

   1961年，G.  K. Guennel迁居科罗拉多州，供职于Ohio Oil Co./Marathon Oil Co （Littleton, Colorado），从事研究活动，同时非常热心于足球等体育事业。
