位于纽约大都市中的美国自然历史博物馆(American Museum of Natural History--AMNH, New York)成立于1869年。近年来，该馆每年的游客量高达500万，确实为国际著名的、研究型的、大型综合自然历史博物馆之一。

   美国自然历史博物馆和首都华盛顿的美国国家自然历史博物馆（The National Museum of Natural History --Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC)及芝加哥菲尔德自然历史博物馆（The Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois）构成美国本土三大自然历史博物馆。

   美国国家自然历史博物馆和芝加哥菲尔德自然历史博物馆都是很重要的古植物学研究平台，而古植物学似乎与美国自然历史博物馆无缘。

   纵观美国自然历史博物馆140多年的发展历史，该馆并非与古植物学毫无历史渊源。

   1906年，Roy Chapman Andrews（1884--1960）开始供职于美国自然历史博物馆。20世纪20年代，他领导和组织了著名的“中亚科学考察团”（Central Asiatic Expedition）。

   1925年，Roy Chapman Andrews邀请了美国古植物学家Ralph Works Chaney (1890--1971)参加了“第3次中亚科学考察团”（Third Central Asiatic Expedition）。当时，Ralph Works Chaney供职于UC Berkeley,也在卡耐基研究院兼职。这是Ralph Works Chaney第一次远赴中国进行古植物学野外考察，对开启中美两国在化石植物领域的交流与合作具有重要历史意义。

   1926年，Roy Chapman Andrews出版了题为“On the Trail of Ancient Man--A Narrative of the Field Work of the Central Asiatic Expeditions”的纪实性科学考察著作。时任美国自然历史博物馆馆长、著名地质学家和古生物学家Henry Fairfield Osborn (1857--1935)为该书写了序言。

   1935—1942年，Roy Chapman Andrews担任美国自然历史博物馆馆长。
