美国是世界古植物学研究的大国和强国之一，它的古植物学研究力量主要分布在高水平的、研究型博物馆，美国许多大学的古植物学研究也“博物馆化”，即在大学所属博物馆进行，从而构成了美国古植物学研究的国家体系或相对稳固的研究平台。

   通过“Umbrella of American Paleobotany”（美国古植物学之伞）这项工作，我们试图全方位地透视美国古植物学全面崛起的历史过程，建立一个伞状、树状和网状的学术谱系。与此同时，我们期望开展以下专题性的研究：

(1)  美国自然历史博物馆（包括大学所属自然历史博物馆）的发展对古植物学的促进作用；

(2)  美国研究型大学对古植物学的推动作用；

(3)  美国妇女与古植物学；

(4)  从古植物学看美国基础科学研究。
