美国古植物学家James Morton Schopf (1911--1978) 

----开启美国古生物学的“Schopf王朝”

        James Morton Schopf (1911--1978)是20世纪美国著名的古植物学家、古孢粉学家和煤田地质学家，他是一位有远见的科学家。1975—1978年，James Morton Schopf担任国际古植物学协会主席。James Morton Schopf的两个儿子Thomas James Morton Schopf (1939--1984)与JamesWilliam Schopf（1941--）也都是著名的地质古生物学家。Thomas James Morton Schopf为《古生物学杂志》(Journal of  Paleobiology)的创刊人和编辑；James William Schopf研究前寒武纪古生物学，现为美国科学院院士。Schopf父子形成了美国古生物界（或古植物学界）一个有趣的“Schopf王朝”。

        1978年对于Schopf父子来说是很特殊的一年：James Morton Schopf 去世；年仅39岁的Thomas James Morton Schopf晋升为芝加哥大学正教授。同年，James William Schopf以古植物学家的身份参加了“美国植物学会访华代表团”，对中国科学院等学术机构进行了富有历史意义的参观访问。本文简介“Schopf王朝”的开启者James Morton Schopf 博士。

       1911年6月2日，James Morton Schopf出生于怀俄明州(Wyoming) Cheyenne市。1930年在怀俄明大学(The University of Wyoming)获得学士学位，主修植物学。

    1932年James Morton Schopf在伊利诺斯大学厄巴纳-香槟分校( Universityof Illinois at Urbana-Champaign--UIUC)获得硕士学位，主修植物生态学，辅修地质学。

    1937年，James Morton Schopf在UIUC完成了题为《落叶松胚胎学》（The embryology of  Larix）的博士学位论文，导师为植物形态与胚胎学家John Theodore Buchholz(1888--1951)和地质学家Harold R. Wanless (1898--1970)。James Morton Schopf的博士论文基本信息如下：

        1930—1933年：主要在UIUC植物系做助教（Teaching assistant）；

        1934—1943年: 在伊利诺斯地质调查局煤炭分局工作（Coal Division,  Illinois State Geological Survery）；

        1943—1947年: 在美国矿业局工作（The  U.S. Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh）；

        1947—1978年: 主要供职于美联邦地质调查局（The U.S. Geological Survey）;

         1949年:在俄亥俄州立大学建立了煤田地质学实验室（ Coal Geology Lab at Ohio State University）；

         1960—1978年:研究南极古植物学（ The palaeobotany of the Antarctic）。

        James Morton Schopf 对煤核植物研究有重要贡献，他对古孢粉学和煤田地质学也有重要贡献。

         1975--1978年，James Morton Schopf担任国际古植物学协会主席。

         James Morton Schopf获得很多荣誉和奖励。例如：1976年，荣获美国科学院颁发的“Mary Clark Thompson”奖章。

         1978年5月荣获美国古生物学会奖章。同年，9月5日病逝。
