Chester Arthur Arnold(1901--1977)

----从美国农家少年到国际古植物学协会主席

   古植物学是纯粹的自然历史。有人说，化石（包括植物化石）是大自然的游戏，曾经是贵族富人玩赏的东西。有人说，古植物学圣洁高雅，TA是自然历史研究中的“冷美人”。有人说，古植物学用最有力的植物化石证据说话，TA不是任人打扮的小姑娘。

   然而，有一个悖论：现在全世界古植物学研究者基本上来自草根阶层，纯粹为了生计(或纯粹为了养家糊口)与纯粹的科学态度（或纯粹的信念追求）虽然在逻辑上未必存在必然的内在冲突，但在实际操作上往往不容易协调一致。

   无论是怎样的情形，我相信，这个世界似乎不需要太多的古植物学家，但需要拔尖的古植物学家！本文简介出身于美国农家的卓越古植物学家Chester Arthur Arnold (1901--1977)，他生前为美国密歇根大学植物学和地质学教授，曾担任国际古植物学协会主席[注：密歇根大学（University of Michigan）赫赫有名，是美国公立研究型大学的佼佼者之一。]

(1)成长经历与教育背景

   1901年，Chester Arthur Arnold出生于位于美国中西部的密苏里州的Leeton之小镇。他的父母在农场干活。Chester Arthur Arnold的童年是在农场度过的。艰苦的农场生活(austere nature of his farm life)使Chester Arthur Arnold形成了生活节俭、沉默寡言之性格。

   后来，Chester Arthur Arnold随父母搬迁到美国东北部纽约州的Ludlowville，离著名的康奈尔大学不远（Ithaca, New York）。  

   Chester Arthur Arnold入学康奈尔大学的初衷是想学农科。但受植物学教授Loren Clifford Petry（1887--1970）的影响，Chester Arthur Arnold改变了初衷，放弃农科转学古植物学，主要研究泥盆纪植物。1924年，Chester Arthur Arnold获得学士学位，1929年获得博士学位。其博士学位论文基本信息如下：

       1928年，时任密歇根大学植物系主任的植物学教授Harley H. Barlett (1886--1960) [ Chairman of the Botany Department at the University of Michigan]聘任Chester Arthur Arnold为植物学教员（Instructor of botany）。翌年，Chester Arthur Arnold被任命为古生物博物馆负责植物化石的管理和研究。7年之后，也就是在1935年，晋升为助理教授。1947年晋升为植物学和地质学教授。1970年退休。

   Chester Arthur Arnold的古植物学研究主要聚焦于泥盆纪和石炭纪植物化石（包括孢子化石），但他也涉猎了新生代植物。除研究专著和教科书之外，Chester Arthur Arnold一生约发表120篇研究论文。1947年出版的教科书《古植物学导论》（An introduction to paleobotany）曾经很受欢迎。他的代表性论著：

   由于卓越的学术成就和威望，1959—1964年，Chester Arthur Arnold担任第2任国际古植物学协会主席（The 2^nd President of the International Organization of Palaeobotany--IOP）。

(3)培养古植物学人才

   Chester Arthur Arnold供职于密歇根大学42年，听过他授课的学生众多，但他指导的古植物学研究生颇少，包括：Richard A. Scott，J. Stewart Lowther，Helen Smith，Alan Graham Hermann F. Becker (1907--1985)和Charles Miller。

   除上述研究生，Chester Arthur Arnold还接受了两位博士后研究人员，一位是英国古植物学家William G. Chaloner（1928--），另一位是美国古植物学家Theodore Delevoryas （1929--）。

   1953年，William G. Chaloner在英国雷丁大学(The University of Reading)跟随Thomas Maxwell Harris教授(FRS, 1903---1983)完成博士学位论文。之后，William G. Chaloner来美国跟随Chester Arthur Arnold教授从事了为期一年的博士后研究。1976年，William G. Chaloner教授当选为英国皇家学会院士。1981—1984年、1984—1988年William G. Chaloner教授连任两届国际古植物学协会主席。在我数次访问伦敦期间，我时常听到William G. Chaloner教授重复讲述他在美国跟随Chester Arthur Arnold教授从事博士后研究的愉快经历。

   1955年，美国古植物学家Theodore Delevoryas在伊利诺斯大学厄巴纳-香槟分校(University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign--UIUC)跟随Wilson N. Stewart（1917--2004）完成了博士学位论文。随后，Theodore Delevoryas到密歇根大学跟随Chester Arthur Arnold教授从事博士后研究，为期一年。Theodore Delevoryas教授成为20世纪下半叶美国古植物学的著名导师之一，他于1979—1981年担任国际古植物学协会主席。
