The International Organization of Palaebotany (IOP) was founded during the 8^th International Botanic Congress (IBC--VIII, Paris) in 1954. Carl Rudolf Florin (1894—1965), a Swedish palaeobotanist served as the first president of IOP.

The IOP elections were once made during the IBC several times till the Sidney conference in 1981. However, the first quadrennial conference of IOP (IOPC--I) was held in Reading, UK in 1980. The IOP election has been made during the IOPC since 1984.
