耶鲁大学创建于1701年,其校训(或座右铭)是用希伯来文和拉丁文写的,意思是追求“光明和真理”。

∮ 1 金融家、实业家和慈善家George Peabody(1795--1869)在1866年捐资给耶鲁大学兴建了一座自然历史博物馆(即“Yale Peabody Museum”)。这座博物馆历史悠久,是北美地区大学所属自然历史博物馆中最有名的一个。
2001年,Yale Peabody Museum完成“环境科学中心”(Environmental Science Facility)的扩建工程,标本的馆藏和研究条件得到较大改善。

∮ 2 近一个半世纪以来,Yale Peabody Museum对北美地区乃至全世界的自然历史之教学、科研和社会服务发挥重要作用。总的来讲,耶鲁大学的地质古生物学知名学者很多,成就辉煌。
在华语世界,人们时常津津乐道的胡适先生(1891--1962)的美国朋友-- Edith Clifford Williams (1885--1971)的父亲Henry Shaler Williams (1847--1918)曾在耶鲁求学,并于1892--1904年担任耶鲁大学地质学教授。Henry Shaler Williams是Elias Howard Sellards (1875--1961)的博士学位论文导师之一。
已故美国科学院院士、专攻无脊椎动物化石的地层古生物学家Carl Owen Dunbar(1891--1979)担任耶鲁大学地质学教授39年(1920--1959年)。已故中国科学院院士、地层古生物学家--杨遵仪先生(1908--2009)曾在耶鲁跟随Carl Owen Dunbar教授学习。杨遵仪1939年毕业于耶鲁大学,获博士学位。杨遵仪是在耶鲁大学专攻地层古生物学的第一个中国人。

∮ 3 自然历史研究中的各个门类之发展往往是不平衡的。化石植物的研究一般不会像恐龙那样受大众关注和喜欢。
耶鲁大学第一位专供化石植物研究的博士研究生是George Reber Wieland (1865--1953)。他本来想跟随著名地质古生物学家、美国科学院院士Othniel Charles Marsh(1831--1899)从事脊椎动物化石的研究。他到耶鲁后改变了研究方向--主要从事化石苏铁的研究。1900年,George Reber Wieland在耶鲁获得博士学位,为耶鲁大学培养的第1位古植物学博士。此后,他一直在耶鲁从事古植物学研究,直到20世纪40年代退休。George Reber Wieland的传世之作为两本很厚重巨著----《美国化石苏铁》(American Fossil Cycads),分别完成于1906年和1916年。

耶鲁大学古植物学有100多年的发展历程,其人气一直不旺。Leo J. Hickey教授(1940--2013)是耶鲁大学第一位古植物学教授(full professor),1982年开始供职于耶鲁大学,直到他2013年去世,服务耶鲁30年。
